Magic Skills is one of the main skill groups in Skyrim. There are five major magic skills: Alteration, Conjuration, Destruction, Illusion, and Restoration which correspond to the five schools of magic in Skyrim. Enchanting is the magic crafting skill and has a different mechanic then the other magics. Using Potions can give very powerful bonuses to your magic skills and Enchantments can even reduce Magicka costs when casting spells.

Casting spells in Skyrim

Magicka is the resource for casting spells. You can increase your Magicka pool by investing points into it when you level up or by using enchanted equipment with Fortify Magicka that increases Magicka.

You can wield up to 2 different magic spells at a time one in each hand, and even be casting or channeling both spells at the same time, or use a weapon in one and cast a spell in the other. You can equip the same spell in both hands and cast multiple of the same spell quickly this way too. The Dual Casting perks in each magic skill allow you to combine the same spell cast from both hands with a stronger effect.

Players can find magical equipment with enchantments to reduce spell costs for a specific school of magic, these are additive and can help make spells cost 0 Magicka to cast.

Learning new spells in Skyrim

Spells in Skyrim can be learnt through picking up and using the corresponding Spell Tomes. Alternatively players can be taught spells during or as a reward for some Quests. Some spells cannot be learnt and are only temporarily made available to use when wearing some unique pieces of equipment.

Spell tomes can be found scattered around Skyrim or purchased from a variety of Merchants. Spell tomes for Adept (50) and Expert (75) level spells can be found and bought once the player has reached level 40 and 65 in that skill. Master level spells can only be learnt by completing the level 90 ritual quest for the respective school of magic.

What is the Best Spell in Skyrim?

The best spell is the one that works. Fire Storm might have the highest base damage as a spell but it takes both hands to cast and a charge up time before it activates while Flames has a low Magicka cost  to cast but also deal low damage. As you find and learn new spells throughout your Skyrim adventure check out the skill pages for what spells you might want to learn. While there might not be a best spell, here are some good spells to know and use:

  • Dragonhide: Grants powerful temporary armor
  • Soul Trap: Fills soul gems with the souls of dead foes
  • Chain Lightning: Can bounce off surfaces and characters to hit enemies behind cover
  • Ignite: Can apply stacking burn damage over time doing good single target damage over time.
  • Muffle: Move more quietly for a duration
  • Frenzy: Make characters fight each other for awhile
  • Invisibility: Go invisible for a duration

Tips for Players new to Skyrim

  • Focus perk points on your main skill - Keeping to one skill grants more powerful bonuses quickly
  • Magicka regenerates slower in combat - Keep restoration potions on you to use when urgent
  • Spell Tomes teach you new spells - Look for and buy spells when you see ones you like
  • Some races have racial bonuses early - Consider checking out the Races page when creating a new character
  • The College of Winterhold is a good place to explore as a mage - There are a variety of side quests with mage related rewards
