Weapons in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim refer to offensive equipment that the player can equipped by the player character, used to deal damage to Enemies in combat. Skyrim's Weapons are the most prominent tools used in battle and are divided categorically by their class: One-Handed Weapons, Two-Handed Weapons, and Archery Weapons. Within each weapon class, weapons are further categorized based on their type. Aside from varying stat values and special effects, each weapon type has unique characteristics and behaves differently in combat.

Skyrim Weapons Overview
Weapon Classes and Characteristics
Skyrim weapons offer a large amount of diversity and options with which to approach combat. Each weapon comes with the standard stats Base Damage which determines its damage output before enchantments, perks, skill level and other modifiers come into play, Weight which counts towards your encumbrance and affects the amount of Stamina used by Power Attacks, and Value which determines the base amount the weapon will sell for. There are also hidden stats such as Swing Speed, Reach, Crit and more. The Dragonborn can have varying setups for weapons depending on their preferences.
One-Handed Weapons are typically the fastest class of weapons, trading damage and reach for speed and lightness. Weapon types include Daggers, Swords, War Axes and Maces. One-Handed weapons offer a lot of versatility as they only take up one hand equipment slot, meaning that they can be dual-wielded with other one-handed weapons. Players can equip any combination of daggers, swords, war axes, or maces. Additionally, they can also be wielded in tandem with Shields, Staves or Spells in the off-hand. Note that while dual-wielding 2 one-handed weapons, you will be unable to block attacks.
Two-Handed Weapons are usually much heftier, dealing more damage at the expense of a typically slower swing speed. They also have greater reach than one-handed weapons. Weapon types include Greatswords, Battleaxes and Warhammers.
Archery Weapons refer to Bows and Crossbows which can be used to deal damage from a distance and are great for sniping enemies unaware. Bows require Arrows while Crossbows require Bolts in order to fire and there are a variety for each type of ammunition, some with special effects.
These three main weapon classes are each governed by the One-Handed, Two-Handed and Archery skills, respectively. Using a weapon from each class will increase your level with the corresponding skill trees, allowing you to improve your effectiveness with the weapons, unlock bonuses, perks, as well as get the most out of each weapon.
Staves are a separate class of weapons that can be used in combat to cast a wide variety of spells, depending on the staff's enchantment. Using a staff depletes its enchantment, which can be recharged by using filled Soul Gems. Most staves cannot be used as melee weapons despite some of them having a Damage stat. Unlike the main weapon classes, Staves are classified under and governed by the magic schools of Alteration, Conjuration, Destruction, Illusion and Restoration. Raising your skill level in these schools will improve your ability to use the associated Staves, including reducing the cost of casting a staff's enchantment. A Staff can be dual-wielded with another Staff or other one-handed weapons and Staves of the same school typically have the same appearance.
Weapon Crafting and Upgrades
While there are plenty of weapons to be found, purchased, or obtained as quest rewards in Skyrim, many can also be crafted. This requires investing in the Smithing skill of the Warrior skill line. Smithing allows for the crafting of equipment, including Weapons and Armor, using various materials such as ingots and leather. Its various perks allow for the creation of a wider varierty of Weapons. For example, the Dwarven Smithing perk unlocks the ability to craft Dwarven Weaponry.
Smithing can be performed at Smithing Stations. These are facilities that can be found in major cities and most other settlements. Weapon crafting, specifically, can be performed at any Forge or Anvil within a settlement. Weapons are made of various materials, with rarer materials resulting in better, more powerful weapons, from the simple Iron Ingots used to create Iron Weapons to the Refined Malachite required to craft Glass Weapons. The ingots for Weapon crafting can primarily be obtained by melting down raw Ore at a Smelter, another type of Smithing Station.
Further still, weapons can be upgraded at a Grindstone, using the appropriate materials, increasing their damage potential. The higher your Smithing skill level, the more potent the upgraedes you can make to your weapons. Addtionally, using the Enchanting skill, you can imbue crafted weapons with various effects to tailor your tools of combat to your playstyle and preferences.
The Best Weapons in Skyrim
Skyrim can be played with many different builds and many weapons can contend to be the best in the game for different purposes and situations. Typically, you will want to craft the Dragonbone weapons as they are the top of the line when it comes to craftable weaponry. The following is a list of the most notable unique weapons in Skyrim, either due to their damage output, utility, versatility or simply for a more unique approach to combat:
- Mehrunes' Razor: -A powerful Daedric Artifact Dagger that has a chance to instantly kill any enemy when attacking.
- The Longhammer - A Warhammer with the fastest swing speed within its weapon class in Skyrim.
- Dawnbreaker - A Daedric Artifact Sword that deals additional Burn damage and can cause undead to explode on death.
- Chillrend - Deals additional Frost damage on hit as well as a chance to inflict paralysis on foes for 2 seconds.
- Dragonbane - Deals a large amount of bonus damage to Dragons.
- Mace of Molag Bal - A Daedric Artifact Mace that deals damage to a target's Magicka and Stamina, and also casts Soul Trap on them with every hit.
- Nightingale Bow - High base damage with additional Shock and Frost damage on hit.
- Wabbajack - A Daedric Artifact Staff with highly unpredictable effects, but arguably some of the highest damage dealing potential when the right spells go off. Something to consider when fighting incredibly tough opponents, if you can get past the complete randomness.
